A sterile stage set with minimalist décor and virtually no props is bathed in ominous night lighting in shades of cobalt, indigo, and Berlin blue. The characters move like marionettes, or with a deliberate, balletic quality; physical contact is almost entirely absent, and eye contact is avoided. This whole extremely slow dance — inspired by Japanese Noh theatre and delicately shaped by Debussy's music — feels like a series of deeply poetic miniatures. By choosing such a spare palette and such economy of movement, Wilson focuses the audience's attention entirely on the unfolding drama and the flawless singing of the performers.
In the leading roles are star soloists led by Stéphane Degout, Elena Tsallagova, and Vincent Le Texier; even the secondary parts are sung by artists of the calibre of Anne Sofie von Otter and Franz-Josef Selig. At the podium, maestro Philippe Jordan.
